Teaching our Children to Fight Sin.

Fighting sin is something that I've been learning through the years. I've learned that if I'm passive then sin will take over my life without me even noticing. It will wreck havoc in my heart and steal all of my joy and happiness and leave my pride, idols and desires for selfish gain freely reining in my life.

Ways I fight sin is to daily preach the Gospel to myself. I remind myself that my performance does nothing to merit favor or a 'righteousness' with God, my disposition is settle. God's disposition towards His children are settled based on the Cross, Christ's perfect righteousness and therefore my standing is that of Jesus'.

I read. I read a lot to flood my mind with truths instead of allowing my default thoughts take over. I pray for God's aid in my fight with sin. Although this is only a few ways I fight sin I've been thinking a lot about the implications of my children fighting sin in their own life.

Do you consider your time at church enough to help you in your everyday struggle with sin? I dare to say no, you fight with scripture meditation, prayer and reading daily. My children are too young to read on their own and even music is sometimes beyond their comprehension. Something in my life that is lacking now is helping my children fight their sinful tendencies.

I must not only read them Gospel stories but relate it to their sinful little life. When we memorize scripture I need to explain how it affects them personally. I need to examine and seek to understand the root idols in their life, and help them to grasp it, not just simply try to change their behavior.

I need to help them understand that as believers their need for a Savior is daily. When they sin I need to remind them {along with discipline} that they are forgiven based on their correct standing with God, based on Christ. When they are 'good' I need to remind them that even our best efforts don't merit favor with God.

I need to encourage them to love, be gracious, kind, self-less because of the love they have been shown. May we actively teaching our children unfavored grace so that we don't create Pharisees that go to church, repeat the catechism, have all the verses memorized yet have no love, and no understanding of God's character.

What ways do you enable your children to fight sin in their own life?

Homemade Display

This homemade display can be used for so many things and super cheap!
Display those cute cupcakes you just made, cookies, cakes or anything else that needs to be displayed.

{I purchased two silver trays and two candle stick holders at the Dollar Tree.}

Prime. Purchase a spray can primer and coat each tray and both candle stick holders. Make sure you let this completely dry {follow directions on can}.

Paint.
Once your primer has completely dried
then add two coats of spray paint to every item
{following directions on can}.

Glue. After all the paint has dried place your strong glue to the bottom of the candle stick holder's edge {all the way around} and then carefully place in the center of the bottom tray. Hold it down for a few minutes and let it get a strong grip.

Glue. Next just keep adding your layers! Place glue on the top of candle holder and place tray on top of the holder. {If you prefer you can switch this direction with the previous one.... place the tray on the top first and then keep adding}

That's it! The biggest tip is let everything completely dry. It takes time and you don't need to rush or it will mess up. Also, make sure you line up your candle holders even... as you can tell I was in a hurray and mine didn't make it out even! You can do these in whatever color is your fancy! I'm thinking different colors for different seasons or if you a fan of a certain team you could have the coordinating colors!

{Food shouldn't be placed directly on these trays because of the paint, I just put paper dollies down and it dresses it up even more!}

Lent WordArt.

Monday I shared with you a printable which you can use to decorate your home during this Lent Season. Here is another printable that I use in my own home.

To Download simply click here!

May it be a reminder about all this season is meant to reflect. Those who are in Christ have had all of their wrath from God absorbed by Christ on the Cross. Our Sin has been conquered, our justification has be settled through Christ's atonement. We have been bought and are free. {Only a few things to focus on during this Lent and reasons to Rejoice!}

Gospel Song.

What are you in need of each time you sin? What about each time your tempted to settle for a temporary happiness and not the ultimate satisfying Christ? The Gospel Song. You need it to swoop in and invade your wandering thoughts. The Gospel Song must come and take center stage to drown out all the other voices.

What does this Song sound like? It's declarations about your life in Christ. It is truths about your identity. If you have been justified through Christ, not based on your works but brought near to God through Jesus' death then you are:

f o r g i v e n. a d o p t e d. p e r f e c t.
b e l o v e d. h e i r s. h o l y. r i g t e o u s.

All of these things must be sung over you. They are not to be background music that we become accustomed to and hope the preacher will move past because we've heard them and we know them. They are declarations about us that we must dwell on moment by moment.

Other voices will be diligent to drown out the life giving declarations. The voices that are so subtle that you won't realize you're being captivated by their persuasive lies. It comes in so many forms but at the root they are pointing to idols in our lives that we treasure above Christ.

Some forms include:
works righteousness
{trying to earn your right standing before God}
self-truth
{trusting yourself and your plans above God's goodness}
despair
{losing hope because you sinned again}
disbelief
{not believing that God is working everything out for your good}
un forgiveness
{not forgiving someone who has wronged you by forgetting how much you have been forgiven}

{These are only a few of a list that could go on and on to suit your own struggles but I believe the list above are a few in which each person could identify with}.

May we be diligent to Cultivate the Gospel in our lives and may Christ sing the Beautiful Gospel Truths over you each moment you are tempted with sin.
May the Beautiful Melody fill you with delight.
May it cause you to be still and bask in the beauty of your identity in Christ and may it cause the other voices seem destructive and joy-stealing as they really are.

* I'm reading Counsel from the Cross by Elyse Fitzpatrick and these meditations flowed from this book. I encourage you to read it and soak up the wonderful Gospel-centered truths. The concept of the Gospel being a song which must take center stage and drown out the other voices was taken from this book.

Homemade Easter Baskets

Easter Baskets. Who doesn't love easter baskets with the pre made goodies wrapped so beautifully and tucked into an adorable brightly colored basket? Okay, so I'm really raising my hand over here, I don't. I'm not one to rush to the store and spend $20 on a basket filled with candy and toys that don't fit my kids or fit Easter. I like cute little bunnies but not for Easter. I like decorating for Spring but I choose to be very intentional at Easter to leave bunnies hopping down the bunny trail and focus on lambs which point us to Christ.

Very few easter baskets fit this criteria so I've decided to make my own. Last year I went to Hobby Lobby and was able to purchase everything half off a few weeks before Easter. The first thing you have to do if your making your own goodie basket is to pick out your basket. Once you've found your adorable basket then pick out your stuff. Make sure you actually put it in your basket so you don't purchase too much. Also, keep dibs on the amount your spending so your not surprised in the checkout line.

In my baskets I want to also include some kind of lamb a book which focuses on Christ and just a few little fun toys.

Do you make your own Easter Baskets for your kids?

Easter Decor.

During the Lent season {time leading up to Christmas} I'm trying to be intentional with decorating my home with reminders. Reminders of my sin, my utter hopelessness apart from the Cross and the ultimate sacrifice of the God-Man. I've created a few word pictures that can be printed and framed and placed around your home to prepare your family for Easter.

To print simply click on the words and select 'save as' then retrieve the file and print!

What things do you do around your home to remind you to focus on the upcoming Easter season?
