God's Not Impressed.

"He isn't impressed with us at all.
He's impressed with His Son.
He's impressed with the perfect life, death, resurrection,
and ascension of Jesus the Christ, His beloved Son.
He's impressed with His love."
Elyse Fitzpatrick

In the stay at home momma's life we might be convinced that all our hard work of daily taking care of our little ones, staying home to disciple and care for our children, being submissive, being the AWANA leader makes God impressed with us. We convince ourselves that homeschooling, maintaining a clutter free and clean house, having obedient children, being an avid reader, not owning a television, preparing home cooked meals and purchasing all organic foods makes God smile more at us. Think of the implications of that if you have a messy house for even a day, if your child disobeys you, if you can't purchase the organically certified squash one week because it's three dollars per little squash that will not feed your family for one meal, then God's not pleased with you?

The reality that we forget over and over or seem to never understand is that it is by grace that we are saved. We are saved by grace and kept by grace. God's disposition towards His children is such a beautiful thing. He loves us relentlessly, causes every single situation in our life to work for our good, favors us and is impressed with us because of Christ. Sometimes when we seem to have it all together, the few hours when we returned home with the all natural products and saved money, our children were wonderful at the store and we received so many accolades, we sit down and formally teach our children about the character of God and dinner is served with joy we  think that God is shinning a huge spotlight on us and is at the other end just grinning from ear to ear.

The Truth is that so often when we peel back even our 'good actions' they are reeking of self-righteousness that is not at all sinless. What is our hope then if God isn't impressed with us, even if  when we seem to have it all together we really don't? Our Hope is Christ. God looks at us as perfection, not because what we do or don't do but because of Christ. His fulfillment of the law, His perfect love, sinless life, atoning death, miraculous resurrection and ascension has gained us access to a relationship with God that is based on His actions and not ours.

Sometimes we may think we're 'good' and have it together but I think we forget how evil each sin we commit really is. We are so full of self-esteem that we don't really think we are that bad so we try to impress God. When we do sin and we actually grasp it we see no hope except to work for God and to try to have Him look at us again and shine that light on us. May we rest in the finished work of Christ. It is finished, the debt has already been paid. May our striving be in seeing the finished work, resting in it, loving it, and may that cause us to live out a life that proves that Christ is more precious than life.

  1. I just finished that book by Elyse Fitzpatrick and I distinctly remember that quote...think I even underlined it. Such a good reminder of where our focus should be.

  2. Yes, yes, yes!! I was a part of an amazing retreat team for my church and we showed Elyse's DVD series on Because He Loves me. It was so amazing seeing the women in our church be transformed by the realization that Christ's record has become our own and God see us as perfect because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross. I loved it!!!
